In March, when the gentle spring breeze caresses and the warm sunshine feels tender, to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, our company has carefully planned a unique and special event: a trip to Shangyu Porcelain Source Cultural Town, where we’ll embark on a romantic encounter with the millennial art of celadon porcelain.
Cultural Journey: Exploring the Past and Present of the Yue Kiln
Stepping into the Yueqing Tang Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, one is immediately greeted by the subtle yet profound traces left by time. The docent, much like a cultural envoy who has journeyed through millennia, leads us back through the long river of history of Yue kiln celadon. From the nascent stages of primitive porcelain during the Shang and Zhou dynasties, to the formal birth of celadon in the Eastern Han period, and then on to its glorious heyday during the Tang and Song dynasties—each stage, with its unique stories and technological transformations, utterly captivates us. The exquisite celadon pieces displayed in the showcases, some as smooth and lustrous as jade, others boasting distinctive and ingenious forms, quietly tell tales of time’s vicissitudes and the painstaking efforts of countless artisans, filling us with deep reverence for this ancient craft.

The birth of Yue Kiln celadon is a wondrous journey that transcends time and skill. It begins with deep mining in the mountains and valleys, where the ore undergoes the rigorous process of crushing and grinding, its impurities carefully washed away through meticulous panning. The resulting clay then becomes refined and remarkably pliable. With masterful hands that seem to possess divine craftsmanship, artisans shape the clay into exquisite forms and painstakingly carve intricate, breathtaking patterns onto the pieces. After an initial firing at low temperature, the坯体 takes on its basic form; next, it’s evenly coated with glaze, lending it a warm and lustrous texture. Finally, the pieces are fired in a kiln at high temperatures, undergoing a transformative alchemy that brings them to life. What emerges before our eyes is nothing less than a masterpiece—elegant, exquisite Yue Kiln celadon, imbued with the wisdom and artistry of millennia.

Handmade Experience: Artistic Moments at Your Fingertips
Next, we’re about to experience the pottery wheel-throwing session for celadon ware—a segment that’s truly exhilarating and highly anticipated. Everyone gathered around the potter’s wheel, carefully placing their hands, coated with clay slurry, onto the spinning clay disc under the patient guidance of our master craftsman. At first, the clay seemed stubborn and uncooperative, refusing to take shape easily. But as we kept adjusting our techniques and varying the pressure, little by little, simple yet promising forms began to emerge from our hands. Some of us fashioned delicate, dainty cups, while others created round and charming bowls. Though each piece took on a unique form, every single one bore the mark of our focused attention and passionate dedication. In that moment, it felt as though we’d transformed into artisans who’ve been carrying forward this age-old craft for thousands of years.

Stepping into the celadon exhibition hall and then moving on to the Yueqing boutique, one’s eyes are immediately greeted by a dazzling array of celadon artworks, each exuding its own unique charm. As you stroll through the gallery, sometimes you’ll pause in front of a particular exhibit, your gaze filled with admiration and awe; other times, you’ll weave between the display shelves, carefully selecting little treasures that catch your eye. Immersed in this rich artistic atmosphere, they’ve managed to escape the hustle and bustle of the outside world and found a sense of serene contentment all their own.
